Common sense dictates that our teeth require daily care through the use of the appropriate teeth care products, regular cleaning, and by visiting the dentist periodically. Ideally, healthy teeth range from an off-white to an almost cream color. The following tips for the maintenance of healthy teeth will aid you in achieving your desired level of teeth and gum care as brushing and flossing alone are generally not sufficient enough to maintain oral health.

One of the main factors behind tooth loss nowadays is gingivitis (periodontitis), a disease which attacks and degrades the gum matrix and the bone in which teeth are held in place. As the disease progresses it reaches the point wherein the tooth loosens and eventually falls out of its socket. This process usually takes months to years, depending on the disease's severity and the amount of oral hygiene practiced by the sufferer. Thus, it is of utmost importance that teeth and gum care be followed to prevent the onset of teeth and gum diseases.

Gum disease is often experienced firsthand as swollen and bleeding gums, redness and tenderness of gums, tooth aches, and low tolerance for temperature extremes (like in hot and cold drinks). These symptoms often make eating unpleasant and often contribute to loss of sleep due to the pain and sensitivity.

Receding gums, however, is often painless and is most often attributed to old age. But statistics have shown that 3 in 4 adults who suffer from receding gums actually suffer from gum disease to the point wherein the root of the tooth is exposed significantly.

Many factors contribute to the likelihood of one developing gum disease. But people who suffer from diabetes and practice smoking habits have an increased risk in developing gum disease as compared to healthy, non-smokers. Given the increased likelihood of developing this disease, teeth and gum care should be a priority for those who smoke and/or have diabetes as a hygienic oral care routine is the only way to health teeth and gums.

Smoking also contributes to discoloration and damage to the teeth as well. Refraining from the use of tobacco-based products coupled with the use of specially formulated tooth care products (for smokers) will ensure cleaner, brighter and healthier teeth and gums.
